The 2017 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

I'll never forget April 14, 2012. Nearly 25 volunteers converged upon the great wall around Girard College to clean up the trash and other debris that swirled around. The Community Partnership Program helped us with supplies and people. I was excited by the number of people who came out to help; there were more volunteers than there were "Dalila Robin" shirts to give away. That was good, right?

We spent hours cleaning up around the wall. When we were done, I stopped to admire our work. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL ... clean as I had never seen it before. You could imagine, I'm sure, how I felt when I drove by the next day to see it was dirty again.

On that day, I determined I would not spend a lot of time doing something that would not really make a difference, although I've noticed, later, the college, which had not been cleaning up around the wall, regularly began to remove trash and debris. I guess we did make a difference, huh?

Volunteering to help in a different way became more important to me. The Campaign for Working Families, which provides free tax preparation and e-filing for low income individuals and families, and Clarifi, a non-profit that is committed to lifelong financial literacy, are two organizations I've chosen to work with in order to give back.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service will occur in just a few days. If you haven't already decided to sign up for for a project, please consider doing so; it's a fantastic way to give as well as to network with others. If you are unable to join a project, there is much to do at Girard College Monday, January 16. Everything should kick off at 8 a.m. Don't forget: There are countless other opportunities to give back all year long. Visit the City of Philadelphia's volunteer portal for more information now.

What plans have you? Will you participate Monday at Girard College, or will you join a project in your neighborhood? I am curious to know. Comment below, and I will give you a shout out during the next edition of The Dalila Robin Show at WPPM-LP 106.5 FM, which airs Sundays from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m.

As for me, my family and I will be at Girard ... Hope to see you there ... Give until it helps.
